MacLean and Muller were teammates with the Devils from 1984-91.
MacLean's stint as a head coach in New Jersey was short, as he was fired just 33 games into his first season. The Devils were 9-22-2 when Lou Lamoriello made the change on December 23, 2010.
In addition to his brief tenure with the Devils, MacLean was an assistant with the club for seven years and also served as head coach of the team's AHL affiliate in 2009-10.
"I'm very pleased to add another character leader to our coaching staff," said Hurricanes president and general manager Jim Rutherford in a statement.
MacLean played 19 seasons in the NHL, compiling 413 goals with 429 assists for 842 points in 1,194 games for the Devils, Sharks, Rangers and Stars. He is New Jersey's all-time leader with 347 goals and won a Stanley Cup with the Devils in 1995.
