TORONTO (Reuters) - Montreal Canadiens forward Mike Cammalleri has been suspended for this week's NHL season opener after slashing an opponent during a pre-season game, the league said on Monday.

Cammalleri, who led all players with 13 goals during the playoffs last season, was penalized after slashing the ankle of New York Islanders prospect Nino Niederreiter during a game on Saturday.

Cammalleri will miss Thursday's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs and also forfeit about $32,000 in salary, the league said in a statement.
