The Boston Bruins will aim for a second straight win to start the season when they host the Winnipeg Jets for Monday's matinee at TD Garden.

The Bruins opened the season at home on Saturday and recorded a 3-1 victory over the New York Rangers. Boston scored a goal in each period and won despite going 0-for-7 on the power play. The Bruins also managed to kill all five of New York's power-play opportunities.

Johnny Boychuk celebrated his 29th birthday in style with a third-period goal for Boston. Milan Lucic and Daniel Paille also scored while Tuukka Rask stopped 20 shots for the Bruins. Rask is installed as Boston's No. 1 goaltender this season since two-time Vezina Trophy-winner Tim Thomas is taking the year off for personal reason.

"I liked our effort tonight," Boston coach Claude Julien said. "Again, couldn't be happier because I like the effort that we gave tonight. The guys seemed to be pretty focused. I thought we had some real good plays and good decisions."

The last time Boston began a season 2-0 was when it won three in a row to open the 2001-02 campaign.

Following Monday's test, next up for the Bruins is Wednesday's rematch with the Rangers in New York.

The Jets will aim for their first win of the season Monday in Beantown. Winnipeg began the shortened campaign on home ice Saturday, but was handed a 4-1 setback by the Ottawa Senators. Erik Karlsson, last year's Norris Trophy winner, had a goal and an assist to lift the Sens to victory.

Dustin Byfuglien scored the lone goal for the Jets, while Ondrej Pavelec stopped 33-of-37 shots in defeat. Winnipeg went 1-for-6 on the power play in the loss.

"I thought that we started off pretty decent, I thought our power play looked like it was good in the beginning and then we had trouble executing," Jets coach Claude Noel said.

The Jets enter the season with some injury issues as defenseman Zach Bogosian (wrist) and forward Antti Miettinen (upper body) are out indefinitely.

The Bruins and Jets split four meetings in 2011-12, but Boston has taken 14 of the last 18 encounters dating back to when the Winnipeg franchise was still known as the Atlanta Thrashers. The Jets/Thrashers have lost 10 straight in Boston.
