Brewers try to stay on winning track vs. D'backs

(SportsNetwork.com) - It seems all the Milwaukee Brewers needed to break out of their funk was a little home cooking.

The Brewers aim to stay on track when they shoot for a series win over the Arizona Diamondbacks Tuesday at Miller Park, where they posted an 8-3 victory in the series opener on home runs from Carlos Gomez, Martin Maldonado and Jean Segura. Maldonado and Segura both hit two-run homers and Gomez ended with three RBI in the win.

Milwaukee's eight-run evening was enough to lift starting pitcher Matt Garza to the win column. Garza did allow three runs and eight hits in six innings, but struck out five and walked only two batters.

"To back me the way they did tonight is awesome," Garza said of his offense. "Just to go out there and gut it out and grind it out for them is the least I could do."

Milwaukee, which is an MLB-best 18-0 this season when scoring four or more runs, had lost two straight and four of five games, and posted a total of seven runs in the previous three. It will also host the New York Yankees and Pittsburgh Pirates on this nine-game, 11-day homestand.

Meanwhile, Gomez is set for an appeal Friday for a reduction of a three-game suspension levied for his involvement during a brawl against the Pirates on Easter Sunday.

Taking the mound for the Brewers Tuesday will be Marco Estrada. Estrada did not receive a decision in last Thursday's 8-3 loss at Cincinnati and walked four batters in six innings of work. He gave up three runs and six hits to go along with six strikeouts and is 2-1 in six starts with a 3.13 ERA.

Estrada has pitched at least six innings in all but one of his starts this year and will make his first start against Arizona. He has three relief appearances in this series and 4 1/3 innings of work.

The D'backs have lost two straight since winning three in a row and dropped to 3-6 in the last nine games with Monday's setback.

Mike Bolsinger started for Arizona last night and allowed four runs and seven hits in five innings to suffer the loss. Randall Delgado did no better in relief and was touched for four runs in the sixth inning. Arizona starters were 4-2 in the past 10 games.

"All in all not a very good job of executing pitches tonight and we paid for it," D'backs manager Kirk Gibson said. "They're a very hot team."

Aaron Hill went 4-for-4 with a pair of RBI singles for Arizona, with Gerardo Parra collecting two hits and scoring twice in defeat. The Diamondbacks left 12 runners on base and are 2-2 on a nine-game road trip.

Josh Collmenter draws the start for Gibson's club and has a 1-2 record in eight games (4 starts) this season with a 3.77 ERA. Collmenter did not receive a decision in last Wednesday's 5-4 win over Colorado and was reached for four runs in a season-high seven innings.

Collmenter is 1-0 with a sparkling 1.23 ERA in five career meetings, three of which have been starts, with the Brewers.

Milwaukee lost six of seven meetings with Arizona last season, including a three-game sweep at Miller Park from April 5-7. The Diamondbacks are 9-4 in the last 13 meetings with the Brewers and 11-6 in the past 17 trips to Milwaukee.
