The Toronto Blue Jays have optioned pitcher Brett Cecil to their Double-A affiliate in New Hampshire.

Cecil struggled in 20 starts last season for Toronto, posting a 4-11 record with a 4.73 earned run average. He went 3-1 with a 6.48 ERA in six starts during spring training this year.

To fill the roster spot, Toronto recalled pitcher Joel Carreno from the Fisher Cats. Carreno will join Kyle Drabek, Ricky Romero, Brandon Morrow and Henderson Alvarez in the Blue Jays' Opening Day rotation.

Carreno made 11 relief appearances for the Blue Jays in 2011, posting a 1-0 mark with a 1.15 ERA.
