Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Frenchman Julien Benneteau and Canada's Vasek Pospisil were second-round winners Wednesday at the Malaysian Open.
The seventh-seeded Benneteau posted a 7-5, 6-2 win over Australian Matthew Ebden, while Pospisil topped American qualifier Michael Yani 6-3, 7-5.
The first round concluded Wednesday and fifth-seeded Spaniard Feliciano Lopez beat Slovakia's Lukas Lacko 6-3, 7-6 (7-3). Lopez's countryman, sixth seed Pablo Andujar, was ousted by Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan 6-3, 6-2.
Russians Nikolay Davydenko and Alex Bogomolov, Jr. were also first-round winners. The 2009 Kuala Lumpur champion Davydenko got past Indian lucky- loser Sanam Singh 7-5, 6-4, while Bogomolov came away with a 7-5, 6-3 triumph over British qualifier Dominic Inglot.
Colombia's Alejandro Falla moved on after American Rajeev Ram retired with a hamstring injury. Ram was trailing 7-6 (7-4), 4-2 when he pulled out of the match.
This week's top-five seeds will all see second-round action on Thursday, including No. 1 seed David Ferrer and No. 2 Juan Monaco. The Spanish star Ferrer will meet Bogomolov, while the Argentine Monaco will encounter Taiwanese wild card Jimmy Wang.
The 2012 winner of this $850,000 tournament will claim $153,400.
