Baylor returns to top of women's hoops poll

New York, NY – Baylor has returned to the top of the Associated Press women's college basketball poll.

The Lady Bears were the top-ranked team to the start the season, but had a run of 21 straight weeks at the top stopped after a loss to Stanford in November. They moved up one spot after Connecticut lost to Notre Dame on Saturday.

Notre Dame's 73-72 win in Storrs on Saturday vaulted the Fighting Irish up three places from fifth to second, while the Huskies dropped two places to third after a one-week stay at the top. Duke, the lone unbeaten Division I team, actually dropped one place to fourth.

Baylor received 32 first-place votes and a total of 984 points from a nationwide media panel, while Notre Dame and UConn each picked up two No. 1 tallies. Duke garnered the other four top votes.

Stanford, Kentucky, California, Penn State, Tennessee and Maryland complete this week's top 10. Tennessee moved up three spots from 12th after Sunday's 79-66 home win over then-No. 10 Georgia.

The second 10 consists of North Carolina, Purdue, Georgia, UCLA, Louisville, Oklahoma, Kansas, Florida State, South Carolina and Texas A&M. North Carolina moved up four spots from 15th, while Georgia dipped three places from 10th.

Oklahoma State, Dayton, Colorado, Miami-Florida and Iowa State are the last five teams ranked. Oklahoma State tumbled eight spots from 13th after losses to Texas Tech and Baylor last week.

Miami and Iowa State are this week's newcomers, replacing Arkansas and Nebraska.
