TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald will receive the NFL Players Association Georgetown Lombardi Award for his efforts to fight cancer.
The award from the players association and the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center in Washington, D.C., was established to honor a leader in the sports industry whose life has been touched by cancer and who encourages cancer research, prevention and treatment through awareness and philanthropy.
Fitzgerald's mother died of breast cancer and he wears his trademark dreadlocks in her honor because that's the way she wore her hair. Fitzgerald helped establish the Carol Fitzgerald Memorial Fund. He hosts several celebrity fundraising events and participates in many more to promote the fight against the disease.
The award is named for Hall of Fame coach Vince Lombardi, who died of cancer.
