JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Mexico forward Carlos Vela is doubtful for the team's next game against Uruguay with a right leg injury.
A person familiar with the injury told The Associated Press on Saturday that Vela could miss a week to 10 days. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team has not released information on Vela's condition.
Vela left the 2-0 victory over France late in the first half Thursday.
Mexico needs just a draw against Uruguay to advance from Group A.
On Saturday, Vela was limited at Waterhouse College while the rest of the team practiced.
The 21-year-old Vela, who plays for Arsenal in the English Premier League, could be back if Mexico advances as far as the quarterfinals. But national team director Nestor de la Torre, team trainers and coach Javier Aguirre didn't give any firm prognosis.
"The player will remain under medical supervision and the trainers will determine when he has recovered enough from this injury to work with the rest of the team," a Mexico federation statement said Saturday.
Vela is one of three forwards Aguirre has started in two World Cup matches: a 1-1 draw with South Africa and the win over France. Giovani Dos Santos and Guillermo Franco have been the other starters.
Aguirre has not decided on a replacement in the lineup for Vela.
