The Results are In: Here’s What YOU Told Major

Fox News Senior White House Correspondent Major Garrett wanted to hear from YOU about what the President should address in tonight’s State of the Union Address. The volume of responses has been overwhelming!  Comments on "Tell Major" have officially been closed, but there will be another opportunity to “Ask Major” … keep reading …

By far and away, the economy is the critical issue that you have the most concerns about.   There are countless calls for fiscal discipline, not just for the federal government, but state and local too.

Gary writes, “The government has to get out of the way by reducing your business overhead (taxes), incentivize business expansion, reward investment. Subsidizing state and local jobs does not grow our economy; it actually grows the overhead that our economy has to support through taxes and therefore retards the only true engine of U.S. growth -- private businesses.”

Jon says he would like President Obama to “offer up a proposal for improving the economy that does not involved spending federal tax dollars.”

Many of you recommend that the Obama administration take the remaining stimulus money and use it to pay off the national debt.

Linda and Alain agree and hope the President proposes an across the board spending freeze.

In a nut shell, you want taxes cut, government downsized and a serious halt to spending. Shirley sums it up, “Stop spending money we do not have,” she writes.

And what about health care? Many of you wrote that you want the President to start over and pursue a bipartisan approach to reform. Jeff explains that “scrapping the Democrat-only ramrod approach and having an open and transparent process so that ALL reform ideas from both sides of the aisle get a fair public hearing and a straight up or down vote on each element of the package,” is what he wants the President to pursue.

Speaking of transparency, it’s an issue that came up over and over again in your posts. Several of you are disappointed that not all of the health care debate was broadcast on CSPAN as the President had promised.

National securityis another area where you want a change in course of action from the President. Several of you raised concerns about the Christmas Day bomber, Farouk Abdulmutallab, being charged in civilian court. “I want [the President] to say that he will protect us from terrorists by using every possible measure to catch, prosecute and punish them,” writes Dan. Chris wants the decision to try 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheik Mohammed in New York City overturned.

And finally, an overwhelming number of you hope the President will stop looking to the past and instead look to the future in tonight’s speech regarding his policies. But perhaps Marilyn and Karen sum it up the best, “It’s not about what he says,” they each wrote, “it’s about what he does.”
