Marlin Stutzman has kept northeastern Indiana's 3rd District in the Republican column by winning election to its congressional seat.

Stutzman will be able to take office in the coming days since he also won a special election to complete the term of Republican Rep. Mark Souder. Souder abruptly resigned in May after he admitted having an extramarital affair with a staffer.

Stutzman is a 34-year-old state senator and tea party favorite who finished second in the Republican primary to Dan Coats for the U.S. Senate nomination before Souder resigned.

Stutzman defeated Democrat Tom Hayhurst, a former Fort Wayne city councilman.
