WASHINGTON -- The White House says President Obama will make a statement Thursday about the results of a one-year review of his Afghanistan war strategy.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said Obama is confident that the United States is making progress. It was the latest signal that Obama is not expected to announce major policy changes.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and others probably will brief reporters after Obama's statement. The White House also will release a public version of the review.

Obama, who visited soldiers in Afghanistan in a surprise visit this month, is not expected to deliver a major speech.
