A gun belonging to a Secret Service agent was left unattended inside the bathroom of Mitt Romney's charter plane on Wednesday, Fox News confirmed.

The weapon was found by a reporter, according to CBS News, which first reported the incident. The gun was retrieved by the Secret Service after the reporter told a flight attendant, who then alerted a member of Romney's security detail.

"We are aware of the incident," Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan said. "We take the care and custody of our equipment, especially firearms, very seriously. We will deal with this matter internally and in an appropriate manner."

The Romney campaign told Fox News that it is aware of the incident and is referring all questions to the Secret Service.

Romney used the charter Wednesday to travel from Tampa, Fla., where the Republican convention is under way, to deliver a speech in Indianapolis, Ind.
