George Will said Wednesday on “Special Report with Bret Baier” that House Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s great advantage in the Virginia Republican primary was money – and it cost him the race to challenger David Brat.

Will, a syndicated columnist, said Cantor's ads seem to have backfired by giving more attention to his little-known opponent.

“He spent an awful lot of money advertising Mr. Brat’s name, so a lot of people said, ‘Oh, we actually have a choice here,’” Will said. "Secondly, he ran some extremely foolish ads saying, ‘He’s a college professor, ergo he’s a liberal.’ Mr. Brat is not a liberal.”

Will also suggested Cantor’s success in Washington hurt him at the polls, saying he may have neglected his constituents while tending to matters on the Hill.

“He is a member of the Washington leadership, and that’s just not a good thing to be these days,” he said.“Traveling constantly and raising funds and doing all the duties…he necessarily neglected some of the housekeeping duties in his district.”
