President Obama heads to New York City for three fundraisers Monday evening and while his race to retain the White House may be decided in a handful of swing states across the country, the campaign's battle for money to fund contests in places like Ohio, Colorado and Wisconsin is being waged in a handful of mostly large and coastal cities.
Obama for America has held 94 fundraisers in New York City, Chicago, Washington D.C. and the state of California while only 47 have taken place across the rest of the country. After the trio of New York events Monday, the total number of fundraisers held there and in California will reach 50.
In New York former President Bill Clinton will make the rounds with Mr. Obama at the three fundraisers across the city. The president returns to the Big Apple next week for a fundraiser at the home of former Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker. This round of fundraising comes on the heels of a New York fundraiser with singer Ricky Martin and a lavish Los Angeles event at the home of actor George Clooney.
Obama is also making a return trip to Los Angeles Wednesday for a LGBT fundraiser that will mark his 53rd event in either New York or California. The Los Angeles event comes after two fundraisers in San Francisco during the day.
Like Wednesday's events, all of the California fundraisers have taken place in the state's largest cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego or their suburbs.
Republican challenger Mitt Romney's campaign has been quick to criticize the president's fundraising on the east and west coasts, some of which has been star-studded.
"While President Obama continues to highlight his ties to the rich and famous - on the heels of a devastating jobs report for Americans - this week we will continue to focus on how President Obama is hostile to job creators, particularly small business," Romney spokesperson Andrea Saul said in an email to reporters.
The Obama camp has said all along it would have to raise record amounts of money to counter Romney's campaign and the Political Action Committees that support it. Last month, Obama campaign adviser David Axelrod spoke of "contract killers" pouring money into the race on behalf of Romney.
"We're also going to be prepared, and I want to be clear, to respond to the attacks that we expect to continue from-- not just from the Romney campaign but from the Karl and Koch brothers contract killers over there in SuperPAC land, who are going to continue to pound away on behalf of Governor Romney," Axelrod said.
Romney has done his share of fundraising in the larger cities as well. Nineteen of 47 fundraisers tracked by the Sunlight Foundation have taken place in California, New York City, Chicago or Washington. And Romney held a July 2011 fundraiser overseas in London.
Romney has sought money in New York city five times and California eight times since starting his campaign or about 28 percent of his fundraisers. President Obama has spent around 33 percent of his time campaigning in New York and California.
An analysis of numbers collected by both Fox News and the Sunlight foundation show that before Monday, President Obama has held as many New York and California fundraisers (47) as Romney has altogether.
Federal Election Commission numbers show the two campaigns took in nearly identical amounts of cash in April with the Romney and the RNC raking in $40.1 million. President Obama's campaign and the DNC took in $43.6 million at the same time.
