Sam Elliott was a little bit hesitant at first to join the "Yellowstone" universe.
The world created by Taylor Sheridan has become a global entertainment phenomenon following the airing of the original neo-Western saga.
There have been prequel series and multiple spinoffs. Elliott was a star of the prequel series "1883," and Sheridan is pulling back the curtain on how it all went down.

Taylor Sheridan explains how Sam Elliott joined the "Yellowstone" universe
Sheridan spoke with Howard Stern on Tuesday, and revealed it took a little convincing for Elliott to join the "Yellowstone" world.
Why?
He didn't like the series led by Kevin Costner.

Sheridan stated the following, in part, when explaining how he cast Elliott in "1883":
"It’s funny because I called him and we talked and he’s like, ‘I don’t like that Yellowstone. That’s a cowboy soap opera.’ I said, ‘You’re right. I’m not asking you to be on that. That’s the punk rock me throwing middle fingers at the industry and a lot of other s---. This is gonna be the grown up me. I have a story I want to tell. Here’s the story, and here’s the arc of your character.’ And I pitched it to him and he said, ‘That’s beautiful. I’d love to do that.’ I said, ‘Great, I’m going to go write it for you.’ And he’s one of the most delightful human beings I have ever met, and a wizard of an actor."

I think I speak for fans everywhere when I say that it's a good thing Elliott agreed to join "1883." He was arguably the best part of the gritty Western series.
His work has also continued with Sheridan since the hit "Yellowstone" prequel. The legendary actor also plays a major role in Sheridan's oil drama "Landman."
