Hannity: President Trump has the wind at his back
It's time for the GOP to come together and start getting things done
President Trump's first address to a joint session of Congress was a very big moment, and the reason he knocked it out of the park is that he focused on his promises and key policy proposals.
The commander-in-chief outlined all of the challenges and problems the country faces, and then laid out his very bold solutions to fix the problems. On the war on terror, Trump spoke bluntly and resolutely, in a way our allies and even our enemies could understand.
“As promised, I directed the Department of Defense to develop a plan to demolish and destroy ISIS,” he said. “We will work with our allies, including our friends and allies in the Muslim world, to extinguish this vile enemy from our planet.”
And when the president discussed domestic issues, he once again articulated the themes that got him elected.
“We must support the victims of crime,” he said. “I have ordered the Department of Homeland Security to create an office to serve American victims. The office is called VOICE, Victims of Immigration Crime Engagement.
“My administration has answered the pleas of the American people for immigration enforcement and border security,” he continued. “By finally enforcing our immigration laws, we will raise wages, help the unemployed, save billions and billions of dollars and make our communities safer for everyone.”
And just in case anyone thought he was going wobbly on his vow to scrap ObamaCare, well, he put that to rest.
“I am also calling on this Congress to repeal and replace ObamaCare with reforms that expand choice, increase access, lower costs, and at the same time, provide better health care,” he said.
I've never seen a president so committed to keeping his promises. President Trump is literally going down a list, checking items off one by one. Now it's time for Congress to do its job, and get up to the speed of Trump because the future of the country depends on their success.
As if to underscore the sense of urgency, President Trump talked about the economic mess that he inherited from the Democrats.
“Tonight, as I outline the next steps we must take as a country, we must honestly acknowledge the circumstances we inherited,” he said. “Ninety-four million Americans are out of the labor force. Over 43 million people are now living in poverty and over 43 million Americans are on food stamps. More than one in five people in their prime working years are not working. We have the worst financial recovery in 65 years. In the last eight years, the past administration has put on more new debt than nearly all of the other presidents combined.”
While the president spoke, the Democrats present for the joint session of Congress displayed their pathetic brand of partisan politics. They sat on their hands the entire night, even when the president talked about putting America first and actually creating jobs.
Cameras caught House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi sitting and staring glumly ahead as President Trump vowed to create thousands of jobs. It showed how much influence the alt-radical left now has over the Democratic Party, and more importantly, that the Democrats have zero interest in working with President Trump as he tries to clean up the mess from their failed leftist policies.
Fortunately, the public and even the media got Trump’s message loud and clear. A CNN poll found 78 percent of people had a positive reaction to the president's speech. A CBS poll nearly mirrored that result, and the honest media praised Trump for giving the speech of his political life.
“I thought it was by far the best speech I've ever heard Donald Trump give,” said “Fox News Sunday” host Chris Wallace. “It was one of the best speeches in that setting I've ever heard any president give.”
Even CNN’s Van Jones, who has repeatedly bashed President Trump, praised the commander-in-chief for his moving tribute to fallen Navy SEAL Ryan Owens and his wife Carryn, who was in attendance.
“He became president of the United States in that moment, period,” Jones said. “There are a lot of people who have a lot of reason to be frustrated with him, to be fearful of him, to be mad at him. But that was one of the most extraordinary moments you have ever seen in American politics, period.”
President Trump now has the wind at his back. He has sincere, concrete plans to fulfill the promises he made to the American people. Now, the GOP needs to come together and get these things done. The American people deserve that much.
