AOC's dystopian AI vision includes elites hoarding resources, wiping out jobs

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., painted a grim picture of an AI-powered future Sunday, claiming that wealthy elites want to eliminate jobs, hoard resources and make Americans increasingly dependent on artificial intelligence.

Speaking at a “Students vs. Billionaires” town hall hosted by student activist group More Perfect University in Ithaca, New York, Ocasio-Cortez argued that the rise of AI could allow wealth and resources to become increasingly concentrated as the technology displaces workers.

“What the elite want, and they're already planning for it, is to hoard all of the resources for themselves as the world gets more and more physically unstable,” Ocasio-Cortez claimed. “And in an environment of AI, they want to wipe out all of our livelihoods.”

“They want to make sure none of us have jobs and they want to keep all the spoils of those riches,” she added.

Ocasio-Cortez later argued that growing reliance on AI could also leave people dependent on technology companies for tasks they previously performed themselves.

“AI systems want us to be dependent and outsource our cognition to a machine,” she said, arguing that companies want consumers to increasingly rely on the technology so “they can sell intelligence back to us.”

The New York Democrat also took aim at how artificial intelligence models are developed, arguing that AI and data systems are “founded on theft” because they use personal information and copyrighted material.

“They are stealing what is yours. Your face, your behaviors, your privacy,” Ocasio-Cortez argued.

She also accused AI companies of using books, news articles and other material without adequately paying their creators, calling the development of large language models “one of the largest acts of intellectual theft in history.”

Anthropic launches faster Claude model as AI rivals race to win everyday users

Anthropic is trying to win the AI speed race with a new Claude model it says can tackle everyday work faster without raising its listed price.

The company launched Claude Sonnet 5.5 on Monday, pitching it for writing, fixing software bugs and creating documents, slides and spreadsheets. Anthropic says the model generates responses more than 30% faster than Sonnet 5.

The listed price remains $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. Anthropic says Sonnet 5.5 typically uses fewer tokens to finish a task, making it up to 30% cheaper per task in the company’s testing. That figure reflects usage, rather than a cut to its posted rates.

Zendesk tested the model on hundreds of customer support scenarios and found that tickets were processed 20% faster, SiliconANGLE reported.

“It made fewer wrong decisions and resolved tickets faster than the Claude models we use in production today,” Zendesk Director of AI Abhinay Kathuria said, according to the outlet. “Tickets were processed 20% faster, getting our customers the help they need without the wait.”

Anthropic also reported a sharp improvement on one coding test, saying Sonnet 5.5 scored 70.6% on Terminal-Bench 4.0, compared with 10.3% for Sonnet 5. The company said its more powerful Opus 5.5 remains better suited to complex, open-ended work.

Sonnet 5.5 is the first model in Anthropic’s Sonnet line to launch with added cybersecurity safeguards. Anthropic said higher-risk cyber requests may fall back to Sonnet 5, while routine software development should be unaffected.

A smaller model, Claude Haiku 5.5, is expected in the coming weeks.

NYC Council subpoenas Musk’s AI company as tech giants agree to testify under oath

New York City lawmakers are putting some of the biggest names in artificial intelligence under oath and they’ve subpoenaed Elon Musk’s company to get it in the room.

City Council Speaker Julie Menin announced Monday that Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and Meta will appear at an Oct. 5 hearing on AI risks and proposed safeguards. Menin issued a subpoena to SpaceXAI after the company did not respond to the council’s invitation, according to the council.

Meta agreed to send a senior leader after the council’s initial request. Google and Anthropic initially declined to appear. OpenAI, Google and Anthropic then agreed to testify after the council warned that subpoenas would be issued Monday morning, the council said.

“Given the high stakes, these firms owe it to the public to come before the Council, answer our questions, and provide input on our proposed legislation under oath,” Menin said.

All 51 council members are set to convene for the hearing, which the council said comes amid warnings from AI executives and whistleblowers and reports of AI agents damaging government databases.

Lawmakers will consider proposals that include incentives for AI whistleblowers, independent testing requirements and a measure allowing New Yorkers harmed by AI agents to sue. National experts in AI safety, technology and consumer protection are also expected to testify.

If SpaceXAI does not comply with the subpoena, the council said it may ask a New York state court to enforce it.

Meta launching business-focused AI platform: 'New chapter'

Meta is launching a new business aimed at bringing its artificial intelligence technology directly to companies, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg calling the effort the “next major pillar” of the tech giant’s business.

“I’m excited about beginning this new chapter for Meta,” Zuckerberg said in announcing the Meta Enterprise Platform Monday.

The new platform will package the company’s AI models, agents and infrastructure into products and services that businesses and developers can use in their own operations.

“We believe superintelligence will create significant new opportunities for all people and businesses,” Zuckerberg said.

Meta said the business will initially offer companies access to technology including its Muse AI agent, Meta Business Agent, Muse API and Muse Code.

Zuckerberg also announced that former MongoDB CEO and President Chirantan “CJ” Desai will join Meta as chief enterprise platform officer and report directly to him.

Desai said Meta’s goal is to turn its AI technology into products companies can deploy themselves as artificial intelligence takes on a larger role in business operations.

“Our goal is to make Meta the place enterprises come to scale their businesses,” Desai said.

Bill Gates warns artificial intelligence 'powerful enough' to cause 'a billion deaths' if unchecked

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates warned that artificial intelligence (AI) could cause "a billion deaths" if left unchecked in the latest push to regulate AI on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday.

During his interview, Gates, who previously warned that AI could be the "greatest equalizer" or "worst source of injustice" without some level of human regulation, stopped short of answering whether the technology could "end all of humanity" but argued that it could drive events that would lead to significant deaths.

"AI is certainly powerful enough to drive events that, you know, cause a billion deaths," Gates said. "You know, so even though it’s pretty hard to get to 100%, there’s never been a weapon as powerful as the combination of people with ill intent using the latest AI tools."

Gates is among several tech giants who have put forth warnings about AI, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Despite this, President Donald Trump has rejected calls to ease back on AI development in an effort to compete with other global powers like China.

Gates disagreed, saying there "absolutely" needed to be more focus on regulation and legislation passed by Congress rather than concerns about global competition.

"The problem is that the rest of the world is either discounting this or just thinking of this as a competition. And it’s very scary that we don’t have all of the thinkers saying, 'How do we want to shape this?'" Gates said.

NVIDIA announces AI safety platform to secure agents

Nvidia announced a new safety platform Monday designed to put guardrails around increasingly autonomous AI agents and quickly stop them if they stray outside their permitted boundaries.

The Nvidia Open Agent Safety Platform combines two technologies, OpenShell and Sentry. OpenShell sets rules for what an AI agent can do and tracks its actions, while Sentry provides an additional layer of security that Nvidia says can detect and quarantine an agent that crosses those boundaries within milliseconds.

More than 100 organizations are working with the platform’s technologies, according to Nvidia, including Anthropic, Microsoft, Salesforce, JPMorganChase, Cisco and SpaceXAI.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said the effort is intended to build confidence as AI agents are given greater freedom to perform tasks on behalf of users and businesses.

“Trust and innovation are not in conflict,” Huang wrote on X. “Safety is how trust is earned.”

Huang called the project the beginning of an “open ecosystem” for building safer AI agent systems.

Trump says he’s meeting Anthropic CEO after vowing US will ‘win’ AI race

President Donald Trump said he was meeting with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei for a late-night dinner Sunday after saying the two would discuss artificial intelligence and the U.S. race with China.

Trump said he was heading to the 10 p.m. dinner after returning to Washington from Illinois, where he attended the final day of the Presidents Cup at Medinah Country Club.

“Tonight I'm having dinner with the head of Anthropic,” Trump told reporters after arriving at Joint Base Andrews. “So these are long days, but I seem to be able to handle it. ... I'm having dinner at 10:00 tonight.”

Earlier Sunday, Trump told Fox News White House correspondent Aishah Hasnie that he planned to discuss AI with Amodei and framed the issue around keeping the U.S. ahead of China.

“Well, we're going to talk about it,” Trump said. “I'm for, ‘Let's go and let's win.’” Trump said he believes the U.S. is “about a year, maybe a year and a half” ahead of China in AI development.

“There is nobody in third place,” Trump said. “I mean, it's just us and China. We're leading by quite a bit.”

The dinner came ahead of a larger White House gathering Tuesday that Trump said will bring together leaders in the AI industry.

“We have, as you know, a very big meeting on Tuesday where everybody's coming in and that'll be very important,” Trump said.
