Girl, 4, Is Allergic to Sunlight

A 4-year-old girl is allergic to sunlight, and cannot go outside unless she is covered from head to toe, London’s Daily Mail reported.

If Tia Davies is exposed to the sun’s harsh rays, she will break out into a painful, red rash.

Tia suffers from erythropoietic protoporphyria, which is caused by a faulty gene that causes the buildup of the porphyrin chemical – and leads to sensitivity to sunlight.

The disease affects the production of hemoglobin and can also cause anemia and liver problems.

There is no cure for this problem.

"She copes really well," Tia’s mom, Selena, said. "She knows she has to wear her hat and her gloves whenever she goes out and to cover up."

All the windows in Tia’s house are covered with a blue UV filter, and Tia applies a light-reflecting sunblock three times a day.
