Apps for healthy eating

Fooducate

This app lets you use your smartphone to scan the UPC codes on any of over 200,000 product labels and see their “nutrition grade” (from A – D) based on their ingredients and ratings from dietitians and food scientists. What’s great is how easy it is to compare products by type and brand. Say your usual brand of pasta sauce scores a marginal “C;” Fooducate will tell you why and suggest healthier alternatives. You can download free versions for iPhone and Android phones and for a small fee there are advanced versions: one devoted to allergies and gluten-free, and one focused on diabetes.

eaTipster

You’re bound to eat smarter following the tips issued by eaTipster, the dietitian-created app that sends daily healthy eating tips right to your mobile phone. Tips are practical and easy to understand, covering topics ranging from basic food facts to nutrition for weight control and for disease prevention. Program the app so you’ll receive your tips at a preferred time, and it’s a breeze to save and share tips.  Download it on iTunes.

Cooking Planit

Billed as the world's first personal cooking assistant, this app features over 500 chef- tested recipes that can be searched based on ingredient or dietary needs.  Pick solo recipes or use the app to put an entire meal together.  It organizes your shopping list on your mobile device and when it’s time to cook your iPad makes it simple to follow a recipe with a voice control feature that lets you advance or repeat steps without touching the screen with messy fingers. Another plus: this app adjusts any recipe based on how many or few people you’ll be feeding. Cooking Planit has a free basic app on its website and premium apps can be downloaded for iPhone and iPad from iTunes.
