102-year-old woman gets to play with team she's supported for over 90 years

At the age of 11, the elderly woman, Maria Guadalupe, became a fan of Barcelona de Guayaquil - also known as Barcelona Sporting Club – which are a team based in the western Ecuadoran city of Guayaquil, when the club was first founded. When the club heard about the longest standing ‘Barcelonista’ fan, they decided to invite her to one of their training sessions. Images capturing of the reunion showed the small smiling woman kicking the ball back and forth with the players even as she supports herself with a walking aid. The happy centurion then gives Damian 'Kitu' Diaz, one of the stars of the squad, a warm hug. Barcelona was founded on May 1, 1925, and is the most successful team in Ecuador, having won the Ecuadorian Serie A title a record 14 times. It was also the first Ecuadorian club to make it to the Copa Libertadores final. The team were named after the hometown of their founder, Eutimio Perez, a Spanish immigrant who grew up in the Catalan city of Barcelona. (ends) (CEN)

Many a sports fan can only dream of playing alongside their favorite athletes, but one woman has seen her wish come true.

Maria Guadalupe, 102, became a fan of Ecuador-based Barcelona de Guayaquil, also known as Barcelona Sporting Club, when the team was formed more than 90 years ago, Central European News (CEN) reported. At the time, Guadalupe was 11.

CEN reported that when the soccer club learned of their longtime fan, they invited her to one of their training sessions. Photos of Guadalupe meeting with the club show the smiling woman kicking the ball around with the players as a walking aid offers support.

Another photo shows Damian ‘Kitu’ Diaz, a star of the club, giving her a hug.
