It sounds like a joke— or a typical college student’s diet— but for Joe Gallo, 21, eating a burrito daily for 100 days has a serious purpose. Gallo’s friend, Bret Grund was diagnosed in April with stage IV glioma.

According to the American Brain Tumor Association, glioma is a general term used to describe any tumors that arise from the supportive tissue of the brain.

Grund, 27, is receiving multiple treatments, but the prognosis for the cancer is very poor.

“I’ve been talking to Bret back and forth and he’s been in great spirits,” Gallo told FoxNews.com in an email. Gallo met Grund through their fraternity. At the time, Grund was a well-known alumni and Gallo was a pledge at Bowling Green State University’s chapter of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity.

Gallo, who lives in Stamford, Connecticut, hopes his food-focused fundraiser can help pay for medical expenses, cover Grund’s cost of living or provide any relief for the physical, mental and emotional stress of the situation. He and his friends hope to raise $10,000 through their GoFundMe page.

He’s currently on day 85 of the challenge and has been documenting his efforts on his Instagram page.

At this point, Gallo admits he’s sick of having a Chipotle burrito every day.

“I picked burritos just because they’re HUGE, and most people can’t finish a single one in a sitting,” he said. “A few days into the burrito challenge, [Grund] shot me a text and just let me know that he really hopes I don’t gain 150 pounds.”
