The Descendents

Ok, technically it's a tale of a man barely holding on in the face of loss and family. It's one many of us can relate to, and it's not much of a surprise that it made an appearance on the Academy's list. But let's be honest, it's a Clooney movie. And no movie starring George Clooney could be paired with anything but a cocktail that radiates rat pack style masculinity, even when he's playing the hapless suburban widowed father of two. To this, we raise The Suburban, a curious mix of rye, rum, port and bitters that marries sweet to spicy and savory in a mix as complex as the man himself.

Ingredients:

1 3/4 ounce rye (Whistlepig is great here if you can find it)

1/2 ounce dark rum

1/2 ounce port (preferably ruby port, not tawny)

1 Dash orange bitters

1 Dash Angostura bitters

Preparation:

Stir all the ingredients in a glass full of ice and strain into a cocktail glass. Then sip and discuss how much cooler the movie would've been had there been wall to wall vampires like there was in “From Dusk Till Dawn.”
