Selena Gomez on her career: 'I'd be fine if it all went away'

Selena Gomez says she would be perfectly fine if she wasn't famous anymore.

While attending the celebrity-studded Met Gala on Monday night in New York City, the 24-year-old pop singer stopped by for a brief interview with Brandon Stanton, the creator of the popular "Humans of New York" photo series.

“I feel like I’m just starting, but I think I’d be fine if it all went away," revealed Gomez.

The former Disney child star credited her mom, Mandy Teefey, with helping her stay grounded through the years.

“From the moment I started singing, she always reminded me that all of this was a privilege, and could be taken at any moment," Gomez said. "So singing is not how I define myself. I try to keep my identity rooted in my friendships and my faith."

Although the pair has been spotted publicly before, the annual gala marked their first official red carpet appearance together.

E! News reported the lovebirds were whispering, “I love you” to one another while occasionally puckering up for the paps.

And it looks like the duo may have gotten the official seal of approval from the starlet's mom.

The celebrity news site also revealed that Teefey commented on a photo The Weeknd uploaded on Instagram of the couple posing on the steps of The Met.

"Glowy, smiling, looking health and equal love," Teefey wrote. "Mama is happy XO."
