Hey, Jamie Oliver, Hands Off Our Fat!
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Hailing from Britian, "Naked Chef" Jamie Oliver is about to take on America's fattest city in a new reality show that will be geared toward helping Huntington, West Virginia residents eat healthier and live better. Oliver, like the rest of the world, likely learned of Huntington's humiliating title following an Associated Press story that ran last year. Since then, Oliver has promoted the show by saying that Huntington residents aren't stupid or bad people, but they just need the help of a Brit with spikey hair to help them get slim. And we say, that's just a tad condescending. Moreover, why is Oliver so concerned with what's going on here in the U.S. when there are plenty of cities in the U.K. that are battling an obesity epidemic? Earlier this year, the Times of London declared Stockton on Tees as the city that ate more pies than any other in Britain. So we've decided if the Brits can send us an imported health guru, we should be able to send one of our best over there to help with the pie-eating problem. Take a look at our list of recommendations.
“Real Housewives” star and natural food chef Bethenny Frankel is the author of “Naturally Thin: Unleash Your Skinny Girl and Free Yourself From a Lifetime of Dieting.” The sassy reality star’s dry sense of humor and no-nonsense approach to dieting would likely fare well with the Brits.
Chef Juan Carlos Cruz is a Food Network chef and the author of “Calorie Countdown Cookbook: A 5-Week Eating Strategy for Sustainable Weight Loss.” He is also the host of “Calorie Commando” and “Weighing In.” The former pastry chef began his career as a health food expert after dropping 100 pounds by eating a healthy diet which he says is easy and sustainable. Cruz promotes himself as a “regular guy” who loves chili and eating at McDonalds, but recognizes the need to make those delicious foods healthy and accessible for everyone. But it’s one of Cruz’s no-nonsense taglines that makes him a great choice: “Never trust a weight loss guru who has never been fat.”
Tosca Reno is a mother, author and chef who famously dropped a significant amount of weight after weighing over 200 pounds for most of her life. Now in her forties, Reno is a bathing suit model and promotes her “Eating Clean” cookbooks and diet books. Reno could help residents because of her accessible nature and her reliability on account of her weight-loss struggles.
Food Network chef Curtis Aikens is all about cooking with fruits and vegetables. The native Georgian, who has always had a passion for gardening, is adept at finding delicious ways to incorporate healthy foods into a tasty diet that is health conscious as well. But the celeb chef is also all about balance – he still loves to head home for his mother’s southern cooking every now and then.
Chef and restaurateur Alice Waters is a champion of eating local, fresh ingredients in her food and is the creator of the original “California Cuisine” restaurant. A huge advocate of eating organic, Waters was first inspired to promote local produce on a trip abroad to France, when a chef would cook meals with ingredients picked fresh from her garden. Waters might want to hold off on mentioning France when she heads over to the U.K., but her delicious treats and recipes would likely inspire even the most dedicated of fast food fans.
