"Love Story" star Ryan O’Neal has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, the actor told People magazine.

O’Neal, 70, who has successfully overcome leukemia in the late 1990s, released a statement through his rep last Friday, explaining that the cancer is currently in stage 4.

“Although I was shocked and stunned by the news, I feel fortunate that it was detected early and according to my extraordinary team of doctors the prognosis is positive for a full recovery,” the statement said.

The diagnosis comes about three years after O’Neal lost his longtime love Farrah Fawcett, who died of cancer at age 62, People reported.  He penned a memoir about his life with Fawcett slated to be released on May 1.

“I am deeply grateful for the support of my friends and family during this time, and I urge everyone to get regular check-ups, as early detection is the best defense against this horrible disease that has afflicted so many,” O’Neal said.
