The Rocket Man still has some star power.

A 1965 Jaguar E-Type once owned by Elton John sold at auction over the weekend for $130,000. The Carmen Red 4.2-liter sports car attracting the princely sum on the strength of the car’s rock royalty provenance.

Elton John first purchased the car in 1987, but auctioned it off along with a collection of 20 of his exotic cars in 2001, lamenting the fact that he didn’t have the time to drive them.

Introduced in 1961, the E-Type was one of the fastest cars of its day and is considered by many enthusiasts among the most beautiful designs of all time. Series 1 E-Types like the 1965 model are the most sought-after by collectors.

According to the Hagerty Price Guide, examples of the car in perfect condition are currently worth about $129,000. Elton’s car is described as being in very good condition, but was last restored in 1979, so the price paid was likely far above market value.

Unfortunately, the seller paid $114,000 for it at the 2001 auction, so as investments go, it may not have been one of the best.
