2013 Smart Fortwo
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}The smallest car in America is about to get beefed up. The Smart Fortwo microcar is getting a few changes for 2013 that don’t make it bigger, but do give it a (slightly) more muscular look. Deeply-sculpted fenders and pronounced side skirts increase its visual size, while a front “splitter” that rises in the middle like the one on an F1 car aim to add some sporty appeal. The Smart logo has also been moved from the top of the hood to the center of the grille for a more upscale appearance.
Located behind the diffuser-style rear apron is one of a selection of engines available in Europe that includes a diesel and a high-performance 101 hp three-cylinder, which is just as powerful as the engine in American market versions of the larger Fiat 500. Details U.S. versions of the 2013 model have not been announced, but it is expected to soldier on with the 70 hp motor available in the current car.
Interior upgrades include higher quality fabrics and available leather upholstery on the dashboard.
Despite struggling sales -- only 496 were sold in the U.S. in January -- parent company Daimler is standing by the brand and plans to bring an all-new car co-developed with Nissan-Renault to market in 2014. Until then, what you see is what you get. There's no where for anything to hide. Read: World's smallest car returns (press photo, do not use for advertising purposes)
