Mercedes-Benz F 125! To celebrate the 125th anniversary of the modern automobile, Mercedes-Benz has created a vision of what's to come. The F 125! (exclamation included) is a gullwing, hydrogen fuel cell-powered plug-in hybrid with a very next gen lithium sodium battery pack. About the size of the current S-Class, it can travel 31 miles on battery power before the fuel cell kicks in to generate electricity for the long haul, up to 600 miles per tank, with water vapor its only emission. As fantastical as the F 125! seems, Mercedes-Benz already offers customers in southern California a fuel-cell powered car called the F-Cell, its availability limited to the region because it is one of the few places where there are currently enough public hydrogen refueling stations to support it. Jaguar C-X16 For those needing proof that Jaguar has shaken off its old-fashioned ways, its new entry-level coupe concept is it. The C-X16 is pure Jaguar on the outside, and a high-tech marvel underneath. It gets its power from a supercharged 375 hp 3.0-liter V6 engine with a hybrid system that offers a 94-hp boost at the push of a red button on the steering wheel, just like F1 drivers get to use. Production plans have not been announced, but the C-X16 would be the first two-seat Jaguar since the E-Type of the 1970's. (AP)
BMW i8 The scissors-door BMW i8 coupe may look like a pure show car, but is set to hit the road in 2013. The plug-in hybrid 2+2 features a 3-cylinder internal combustion engine driving the rear-wheels that combines with electric motors located up front to offer the performance of a sports car and the fuel economy of a subcompact, about 50 miles per gallon. VW Buggy Up! Based on VW's new Up! microcar (yep, exclamation point included,) the Buggy Up! is a reimagination of the classic dune buggies of the 1960s that were based on the original VW Beetle. There's no doors or roof, but the Buggy Up! has a waterproof interior and a trunk with double lids that can be configured to carry a variety of equipment wherever its little 3-cylinder engine will take it. Ford Evos The four gullwing doors aren't likely to see the light of day, but the Evos concept is a look at the face of Fords to come. The trapezoidal grille, trim headlights and muscular body of the coupe are set to be signature elements of the company's cars in the coming years, while it's plug-in hybrid powertrain will be on the road next year in slightly less dramatic C-Max Energi five-door crossover. Click here to read more about the Ford Evos (AP)
VW Nils Its name means nothing and is a fitting one for the barely there VW Nils. The 10-foot-long commuter car runs on batteries for a scant 40 miles per charge, about as far as the electric scooters of today that it aims to replace with its stylish, safer design. And don't worry about what side of the street you park on, it has a gullwing door on each side even though it has just one seat inside. Click here to read more about the VW Nils (AP)
Opel RAK e The Chevy Volt has a little brother. Named after an experimental rocket car from the 1920's, the RAK e, from GM's Opel division, is a lightweight tandem two-seat electric concept featuring a canopy style roof inspired by a glider plane and a motorcycle-type swingarm rear suspension. The battery-powered runabout weighs just 838 pounds and has an electric motor that normally needs just 14 hp to move it around, but has a maximum output of 49 hp. The projected range of the RAK e is 61 miles per charge which would cost just one Euro, or about $1.36. (AP)
2012 Porsche 911 The timeless Porsche 911 enters its seventh generation with a lower, wider, longer and lighter chassis that retains its signature look, now nearly five decades old. Its rear-mounted, flat-six engine is also downsized to 3.4-liters, but with a boost in fuel efficiency and power, now rated at 350 hp. More of the former is on the way as the company plans to release its first hybrid version of the coupe along with an expected plethora of models in the coming years. The current 911 is available in over two dozen different permutations. Click here to read our test of 7 Porsches in 2 Hours (AP)
Alfa Romeo 4C First seen at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show with a unique matte red paint job, the Alfa Romeo 4C came to Frankfurt sporting something closer to German Racing Silver as a tip of the hat to the home crowd. Expected to enter production in the 2013 model year, the lightweight carbon fiber bodied coupe weighs just 1,800 pounds in concept form, is about the size of a Porsche Cayman and has a 200 hp 1.75-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine under its shapely hood. Citroen Tubik Think minivans are uncool? Maybe its time to move to France. The Citroen Tubik envisions a future where executives will be whisked around in hybrid-diesel pods filled with the latest technologies and comfort features. Behind the driver, who is cocooned within a 'cyclotron' construction that incorporates all of the Tubik's controls and head's up displays, passengers can bask in three rows of seats that can be configured in myriad ways, including a bed for those rough days at the office. Silken upholstery and leather carpeting enhance the feeling of luxury, while a one-way rear window allows you to see without being seen. Forget the executives, the Tubik is the perfect thing for stylish international spies to hole up in on a stakeout, and the single gullwing door makes for dramatic exits of blockbuster proportions. 2012 Ferrari 458 Spider Ferrari drops the top and the Italia name from its mid-engined marvel to create the 458 Spider. With a hardtop aluminum roof mechanism that adds just 111 pounds to the weight of the mid-engined two-seater, the 458 Spider retains the 562 hp 4.8-liter V8 of its coupe counterpart and offers performance that's nearly on par. For a price expected to be in the $250,000 range, its the least they could do. Click here to read more about the Ferrari 458 Italia (AP)
