RICHMOND, Va. – The latest on a police shootout involving two officers that left an armed suspect dead and an officer wounded (all times local):
1:20 p.m.
The Richmond police chief says an armed suspect who was killed in a shootout with police fired first and his two officers were justified in returning fire.
Chief Alfred Durham says it was not a racially charged shooting as some in the community have made it out to be. The suspect was black. One of the officers is black and the other is white.
"This is not Ferguson," the chief said, referring to the fatal shooting of an unarmed black man by a white officer a year ago in Ferguson, Missouri. The officer was cleared in that case, but the shooting set off protests and unrest.
In the Wednesday night shooting, officer Ryan Bailey, who is black, was wounded in the arm. The other officer was Jacob DeBoard.
The chief identified the suspect as 20-year-old Keshawn Hargrove. He was a convicted felon who had committed crimes as a juvenile. He was killed by a single gunshot wound, but it's not clear which officer fired it.

The Richmond police chief is promising a thorough investigation into the fatal police shooting of an armed suspect.
Police Chief Alfred Durham said the shooting occurred Wednesday after officers responded to a report of an armed man in an area west of downtown.
Durham said two officers approached the man, who fled. Police chased him, and shots were fired by police and the suspect.
The chief said race didn't have anything to do with the shooting. Officers across the nation have come under greater scrutiny recently as videos and other evidence has shown blacks being mistreated, injured or killed by white officers.
The suspect was black.
The wounded officer was shot in the arm. He is expected to recover fully.
