RALEIGH, N.C. – An off-duty state trooper is being credited with saving a mother and her two children after their car skidded off an icy North Carolina road and flipped into a creek.
The N.C. Highway Patrol says Trooper Christopher J. Matos was driving along a rural road in Lenoir County on Friday when he saw a car traveling in the opposite direction slide off the pavement.
Patrol spokesman Sgt. Michael Baker says Matos jumped into the water and pulled a 14-year-old child out of the passenger-side window of the partially submerged car. He then helped the female driver unbuckle her infant from a child seat, handing the baby off to another motorist who had stopped to assist before guiding the woman to shore.
The mother and her children were treated for mild hypothermia.
