PHILADELPHIA – Jeff McMillan, assistant editor for the East region of The Associated Press, has been promoted to the position of enterprise editor for the area.
McMillan will oversee efforts to cultivate and execute high-end enterprise, investigative journalism and cross-format storytelling for the region, which encompasses the New England states, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio. He will work with journalists in those 10 states to break news through enterprise, identify and get ahead of trends, and illuminate the news of the day.
The appointment was announced Thursday by East Editor Karen Testa and Pauline Arrillaga, U.S. enterprise editor.
McMillan, 40, joined the news cooperative in 2005 as an editor on the former national desk in New York. He was promoted in 2009 to assistant East editor, coordinating daily news flow for the 10 states and managing a staff of about a dozen editors based at the region's hub in Philadelphia.
He has been a key editor and manager on stories including the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, the Newtown school massacre and the Boston Marathon bombings. He coordinated the AP's global coverage of the Occupy Wall Street movement and, more recently, the rapid spread of same-sex marriage in the U.S. He also serves as the East region's primary consultant on matters of standards and ethics, including the development of the AP Stylebook supplement on the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.
"There is no one better suited to this new role than Jeff. His relentless pursuit of fresh, competitive stories — driven by words, photos, video, data — will compel an even higher level of distinctive journalism from this region," Testa said.
Before joining the AP, McMillan was a copy and graphics editor at Newsday on New York's Long Island and a copy editor at the Star Tribune of Minneapolis.
McMillan, a native of Midland, Michigan, attended Michigan State University and the University of Minnesota. He holds a bachelor's degree in American studies from the University of Minnesota.
