During a campaign rally held at a Navajo casino in Flagstaff, Arizona, Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders paid the Washington Redskins a surprising comment, but reiterated his stance on the team's controversial name.
Via the Washington Post:
"Washington has a very good football team but it doesn't have to be called the Redskins," Sanders said.
In 2014, Sanders signed a congressional letter denouncing the name and calling for the NFL to "remove the racial slur from the name of one of its marquee franchises."
Fellow candidate Hillary Clinton has called the name "insensitive" and said in 2014 that there's "no reason for it to continue."
Republican candidate Donald Trump said last year that he supports the Redskins name.
"I know Indians that are extremely proud of that name," Trump said. "They think it's a positive."
