Last week, Cuban-born Pitbull wrote an “Open Letter,” to lash out at elected officials who vehemently criticized Jay-Z and Beyoncé for visiting Cuba.
Now, a rapper who lives on the island came out with her own “Open Letter.”
Danay Suárez Fernández, a rapper from Havana, wrote a song addressed to Jay Z about how people live in Cuba, and the inequalities that take place on the communist island.
Like Pitbull, she too defended Jay Z and Beyoncé in her rendition of the now popular tune.
“It was a nice gesture that they came to visit our wonderful island,” Fernández said in Spanish in a statement sent to the press. "Politics is Politics but, as a member of this country (Cuba) I have taken a vow of honesty and wrote the fourth ‘Open Letter.’”
President Barack Obama also finally spoke about the controversial trip that caused a stir in the media and raised questions about whether Americans should travel there.
“I wasn’t familiar that they were taking the trip," President Barack Obama told Savannah Guthrie on the “Today” show.
"My understanding is, I think they went through a group that organizes these educational trips down to Cuba. This is not something the White House was involved with. We’ve got better things to do,” he added.
The controversy began when the Carters (Jay Z’s real last name) took a trip to Cuba, which coincided with their fifth wedding anniversary. The Treasury Department said the power couple was license to travel there and did not break the law.
Jay- Z responded to the politicians who criticized his recent trip with “Open Letter,” which went viral minutes after the rapper/entrepreneur put the song on his website.
Other artists, such as rappers Common and Wyclef Jean, have also responded with their own “Open Letters” defending the Carters.
