This week in music began on a sad note, with the passing of Etta James. The R&B singer most notable for her classic "At Last" passed away on Jan. 20 after battling Leukemia.
A public viewing was held in Inglewood, California on Jan. 27 and private funeral was held the day after in Gardena. Reverend Al Sharpton officiated and delivered the eulogy for the late singer.
The family has requested that donations be sent to "The Rhythm and Blues Foundation."
In brighter R&B news, Ne-Yo's career is taking few big steps. As we mentioned last week, the singer is co-starring in George Lucas' World War II movie "Red Tales" and is now changing record labels. In his new home with Motown Records, the "So Sick" singer will be taking on many responsibilities including being the new Senior Vice President of A&R, which means he will be serving as a producer, mentor, and talent scout. Ne-Yo says he is "excited, honored, and terrified all at once."
Another young artist getting ahead is Bruno Mars who is taking the number 1 and 2 spots in the annual Global Digital Download Chart with "Just the Way You Are" and "Grenade" respectively. The singer/songwriter gets this news as he prepares for the Grammy's where is nominated for 6 awards.
On to a man who is no stranger to the Grammy's, the Boss, Bruce Springsteen. who is back on the Billboard Rock Songs list at number 49 with his new single "We Take Care of Out Own." The new song is coming off his album "Wrecking Ball" which is due out on March 6th.
In other award season news, the nominees for this years Academy Awards were announced and only two songs were nominated for Best Original Song, "Man or Muppet" from "The Muppets" and "Real in Rio" from the animated film "Rio."
