Video shows English soccer fans blocking black man from Paris train, hurling epithets

A black man who was denied from boarding a Paris Metro train by English soccer fans who were chanting racist slogans said Thursday that they “should be locked up.”

The incident, captured on video Tuesday, shows the man trying to board a train at the Richelieu-Drouot station in the center of the French capital, but repeatedly being pushed off by people onboard, who are heard singing, "We're racist, we're racist and that's the way we like it," according to the BBC. Another voice is heard on the video singing: "Chelsea, Chelsea, Chelsea."

Fans of English soccer team Chelsea were in town to cheer their team on against Paris Saint-Germain in a Champions League matchup.

The 33-year-old man, identified only as Souleymane S., from Mauritania, told France’s Le Parisien newspaper "these people, these English fans, need to be found and punished, and should be locked up."

Transportation officers showed up at the scene, but only wanted to make sure that a fight was not taking place, the BBC reports. The man has since filed a police complaint.

British Prime Minister David Cameron called the incident “extremely disturbing and very worrying."

London's Metropolitan Police said it is working with French authorities to identify the people seen in the video.

Chelsea soccer officials also said they would help police and could ban the fans from attending future games. The team asked fans to come forward and identify the men in the video.

“We will support any criminal action against those involved in such behavior, and should evidence point to the involvement of Chelsea season-ticket holders… the club will take the strongest possible action against them, including banning orders,” the team said in a statement.

If found guilty of racial crimes on public transport, those responsible could face at least three years in prison and fines of $51,000, the Guardian reports.
