Switzerland: remains of 2 Japanese climbers missing since 1970 found under the Matterhorn
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Swiss police say they've identified the remains of two Japanese climbers who went missing 45 years ago, several months after their bones were found on a glacier under the Matterhorn mountain.
Valais canton (state) police said Thursday that a climber found the remains in September. They were taken for forensic examination, and experts put together DNA profiles.
Regional police keep a list of people who've been reported missing since 1925, and they say the Japanese consulate in Geneva helped them find relatives. They confirmed the men's identity by comparing DNA.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Police didn't release the names of the Japanese climbers, who had been missing since Aug. 18, 1970. One was identified in June and the other a month later. They said long-missing remains sometimes surface as a result of receding glaciers.
