The Indian army says a group of heavily armed suspected militants have killed at least one soldier and wounded three others in the latest fighting in the Indian portion of Kashmir.

An army officer says some of the militants occupied an abandoned bunker in Jammu region early Thursday and fired at the soldiers in Arnia sector. He spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to talk to reporters.

Shantmanu, a state government official, said civilians living in a nearby village were evacuated.

The officer said the attackers crossed over from Pakistani territory, but there was no confirmation of that. Dozens of rebel groups have been fighting Indian rule since 1989. Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan.
