Protest in central Venezuelan city turns violent, leaves 1 dead, raising death toll to 16
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}The mayor of a coastal Venezuelan city says an anti-government protester has died in one of the confrontations that have roiled this country for weeks.
Maracay Mayor Mario Briceno Iragorry says the protest turned chaotic when gunmen opened fire on demonstrators who blocked a street to protest the government of President Nicolas Maduro.
Briceno tells Union Radio that protesters stampeded into a supermarket and began looting. The body of the protester was found outside the store early Tuesday. Other local media said he had been shot.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Details about the man were not immediately available. His death brings the toll to at least 16 since a series of protests that began Feb. 12. The protests have declined in recent days and the capital was largely free of barricades on Tuesday.
