Argentina judge charges ex-Cabinet chief with fraud

A judge in Argentina has charged former Cabinet chief Anibal Fernandez with committing fraud against the state.

Fernandez was a loyal ally of former President Cristina Fernandez. A federal judge charged him Tuesday with being part of a fraudulent scheme.

The judge says Fernandez was reaping benefit from a government program that handed out baby cribs, clothes and medicines to poor families.

Other officials from the previous administration, including the former health minister and a provincial governor, were also charged.

The judge also slapped an embargo on some of their belongings for about $23 million and accused them of abusing their power and failing to carry on their public duties while in office.

Fernandez and others accused say the accusations are baseless and are expected to appeal.
