Woman Fighting For Her Life After Car Flies Off New York City Bridge
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}A woman is fighting for her life after a car careened off a New York City bridge, the exact spot where a similar wreck killed an elderly pedestrian last week, officials and rattled residents said.
Authorities say a 40-year-old woman was rushed to the hospital with severe head trauma after the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta flew off the ramp of the 59th Street Bridge just after 4 a.m. Wednesday. The driver, a 39-year-old man, was taken to a local hospital and is in stable condition, The Post reports.
"I came and they were pulling people out of the car, a girl and a guy; the guy was just screaming," said Narinber Singh, who owns a nearby cafe and rushed to the scene after the crash. "The girl could not even breathe, they were putting the mask on her."
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}The driver was arrested at the scene and charges are pending, police said.
Last Monday, 68-year-old Anthony Buscemi was crushed when a red Volkswagen failed to make the sharp-right exit and soared off the roadway, striking him on the sidewalk. The driver of the car, 35, lost his arm in the accident.
"The city should do something to protect pedestrians, a [speed] bump on the ramp or something," Singh said. "This is two times. This could have hit my store; I have three employees inside."
