Severe Weather Causing Flooding in Tennessee
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}MEMPHIS, Tenn.-- Heavy rains have caused widespread flooding in southwestern Tennessee, shutting down several roads including a section of Interstate 40.
Tennessee Highway Patrol says I-40 was closed Saturday morning at the 59 mile marker in Haywood County.
Shelby County Office of Preparedness Director Bob Nations told WMC-TV that flooding was widespread there. He says citizens should stay off roads if possible.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}A statement from the Memphis Police Department says many streets are impassable. Police say they've gotten about 30 reports of people becoming stranded in their cars or not being able to leave their homes.
Tipton County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Donna Turner also reports flooding across that county.
The National Weather Service estimates that up to 6 inches of rain had fallen by late Saturday morning with up to 4 inches more expected by early afternoon.
