Police say a gunman entered a doctor's office in a small Alabama town, shot a woman and fled to a nearby home, where he remains.

Jemison police chief Shane Fulmer said Monday that the man is believed to be armed at the residence. Fulmer says the man entered the doctor's office this morning with a small-caliber handgun.

The status of the victim isn't known.

Jemison is a small town about 40 miles south of Birmingham. Nearby roads and businesses were closed. At least 10 police cars were on the scene. Ambulances blocked the highway in front of the building, with rescue personnel going in and out. Local schools went on lockdown.
