Pennsylvania dad accused of shaking baby so violently, son suffers fatal brain injuries

A western Pennsylvania man remains jailed after he was ordered to stand trial on charges that he shook his 7-week-old son so violently he broke the infant's legs and inflicted fatal brain injuries.

The Tribune-Democrat of Johnstown reports Wednesday that Justin Charles Jr. died on Dec. 23 at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, two days after the infant was brought their unresponsive.

Cambria County prosecutors say 23-year-old Justin Michael Charles Sr. initially told police he found the boy limp while the child's mother left their residence to use a neighbor's phone.

But police testified at a preliminary hearing Tuesday that Charles allegedly confessed to violently shaking the baby because he was upset after his wife and mother got in an argument.

Charles is charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault and other crimes.
