DNA evidence leads to arrest in 1983 Texas cold case murder
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Authorities say DNA evidence has tied a 48-year-old man to the 1983 cold case killing of a businessman in North Texas.
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports Benjamin Bewley is a prison parolee who was arrested in November in a West Texas DWI case.
Jail officials in Abilene say Bewley was being held without bond on charges of driving while intoxicated and violating his parole. He's now also facing a charge of capital murder.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Fort Worth pawnshop owner Melvin Lavine was fatally shot in March 1983 when his house was robbed. Police working the case sent DNA evidence to a federal database and recently confirmed a match.
Bewley was sentenced in 1992 to 20 years in prison for burglary and paroled in 2004.
His attorney had no immediate comment Friday.
