Police in Connecticut say a man forced his way into a home, yelled something about a knife, punched the homeowner in the face and then died in a bathroom of apparent stab wounds.

Stratford police say the intruder had already been stabbed when he went into the home shortly after 1 a.m. Friday. Police Capt. Ken Bakalar says it's not clear if someone else wounded him or if he did it to himself.

Bakalar says the homeowner, Robert Smith, is in his early 70s. He says Smith fell down some stairs but wasn't seriously hurt.

Police haven't identified the intruder. Authorities are using dogs to try to track his path.
