California police fatally shoot 15-year-old suspected of driving a stolen vehicle
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Police in Southern California say officers shot and killed a 15-year-old suspected of driving a stolen vehicle.
Bakersfield police began pursuing the 2001 Acura around 9:20 p.m. Friday. They say the driver stopped, but then backed into a patrol car after being approached by two officers.
The officers opened fire multiple times, striking the teen. Police say he was pronounced dead at Kern Medical Center.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}The Kern County Sheriff's Office identified the suspect as Traveon John Avila.
A 17-year-old passenger was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy, auto theft and participation in a criminal street gang. Police say a third person in the vehicle managed to escape.
The officers have been placed on routine administrative leave, as the shooting is investigated.
