Arizona monsoon closes Buckeye-area school, strands a dozen vehicles in water

An Arizona elementary school is closed Monday because of power-line damage from an overnight storm that trapped drivers on flooded roads southeast of Phoenix.

Officials say there's apparently no damage to Liberty Elementary's buildings and the Buckeye-area school should reopen Tuesday.

Authorities say no injuries are reported after a dozen vehicles were stranded along roads in the Maricopa and Gila Bend areas.

Maricopa County Sheriff's spokesman Joaquin Enriquez says a man driving a pickup that got stuck in several feet of water on State Route 238 between Gila Bend and Maricopa had to climb up to safety into a nearby tree.

SR238 remains closed from just west of Maricopa to State Route 85 near Gila Bend.
