Winter Hair Despair?

It’s tempting to hide under your hat during the cold months to avoid winter hair woes. But none of us are lucky enough to pull a “groundhog” and resurface in the spring. From fighting frizz to creating the “it” looks, Helena Faccenda, hairstylist to the stars and Heidi Klum’s go-to girl for all occasions, dishes on this season’s hair secrets and hottest styles.

Halt Hat Head
When the wind chill is 20 below, no head can brave the cold uncovered. But pull that fuzzy cap off, and your static situation could generate enough energy for a small country. What should you do (besides assure your boss you were not electrocuted on your way to work)? Helena suggests two simple ways to combat static-y, messy hair:

• Spray your hair with a tiny bit of anti-static spray in the morning before you head outdoors and brush it through. When you take off your hat, your hair will still look polished.

Try: Frédéric Fekkai Coiff Perfecteur Anti-Frizz Silkening Crème for ultimate control.

• Hat head can quickly be turned into a chic ‘do with a few simple steps. Using tiny claw clips, about ¾ of an inch in size, take hair from the front and top of your head, twirl strands and clip them high on top of your head for maximum volume. Place hat on your head and trek out into the cold! When it’s time to take your hat off, simply remove the clips and you will have beautifully set, voluminous waves.

Go Sleek and Simple
To keep your locks in sync with top fashion trends; Helena suggests a tight, slicked back bun to complement this season’s structured styles.

• Use a high shine gel and disperse the product all over the outer coat of your hair. Using a brush with extremely soft bristles, gently brush the outer coating of your hair in an upward direction, creating the perfect sleek bun or ponytail on top of your head.

Warm Up Your Look
Helena says another key winter look is soft, sexy waves. Obtain the perfect wave with a few simple overnight tricks—you’ll be able to wake up and go!

• First spray damp to dry hair with a volumizing spray. Flipping your head upside down, make three sections in your hair, braiding each section starting at the nape of your neck. Once the braids are completed, fasten them together into a bun that sits on top of your head. In the morning, simply take out the braids and you’re left with super volume and beautiful waves.

Cut Loose
Winter is the best time to cut your hair. Not only can you say goodbye to sun damaged, fried locks, but Helena says, “the rich, heavier fabrics and fashions of winter, like turtlenecks and scarves, lend themselves to short hair.” Talk to your stylist about a short cut that will work for your face shape.
