The Austrian health ministry imposed an instantaneous ban Thursday on the sale and circulation of the herbal incense ‘Spice,’ which some people smoke because of its hallucinogenic effects, Agence France-Presse reported.
Spice is sold legally in many countries. When burned, the herbal blend releases a “rich” fragrance. However, it contains a cannabis-like substance called JWH-018, the Austrian ministry said in a statement.
The ministry said the effects of smoking the incense have not yet been fully determined, but the risks are high.

Until a permanent ruling is reached, a 14-day ban will be imposed, the statement said.
Although it is marketed as incense, Internet drug forums praise Spice’s effectiveness as a hallucinogen.
Last year, Switzerland banned Spice.
